Hooke's Law is a law of elasticity, and states that the amount of spring force, compressed or stretched, is proportional applied to the spring deformation.  The minus sign shows that the force is in the opposite direction of the force that is compressed of stretched.

 $$\large{ F_s = -k_s \; d_s }$$ Where: $$\large{ F_s }$$ = spring force (applied force) $$\large{ k_s }$$ = spring constant $$\large{ d_s }$$ = spring displacement
